June 11 – Stromness Day Off

By | June 11, 2012

We are now over half way around and have reached the Orkany Islands. A day off today saw us taking a bus to see some off sights.

Skara Brae

The trip took us to see Skara Brae, a 5000 year old large stone-built settlement, located on the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of Mainland, Orkney. It is older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids.

The Ring of Brodgar – Stenness, Mainland Island, Orkany

Tomorrow we plan to leave the Orkanys to travel across the Pentland Firth to Wick at the top east side of Scotland. More when we arrive tomorrow.

Just catching up again with your progress. You seem to be doing well and enjoying it. Good quality photos, too!

Hi Just been following your trip with interest and wondered how well the AIS via Ipad works. Do you just use an app or do you have to purchase an additional receiver?

Tim,
iPad and AIS works really well. I have a Digital Yachts AIS wireless box which talks via NMEA to my Raymarine Nav system. The wireless bit lets my iPad talk to it as well. I use an app called iNavX which in turn uses the Navionics charts.
The iPad is housed in a tough all weather case and can be used on deck in the wet.
See the page on this blog I have done on navigation for more info. Pleased to see that the blog is of interest.

Been meaning to send a comment for the past few days since you reached Lochinver in what I consider to be God’s own country! You were about 30 odd miles from where I grew up!
Great trip so far, then – glad you’ve had a few hours off to see Orkney – magic place! Fingers crossed for those winds to stay in the North.

Regards from all of us here at DFC (beavering away!!)

Victoria, hello now in Wick having been in Stromness for two days. Great place.
Trip across the Pentland Firth was fine as we did it on neaps. No overalls.
Wick – not so pretty – but welcome on the way south. Buckie tomorrow.
