May 11 – Off to Dale to await trip to Ireland

By | May 11, 2012

Friday will be the second day in Milford Haven waiting for the weather to break for the crossing to Arklow on the east coast of Ireland. The first day provided a welcome rest following the previous night passage from Falmouth.

Yesterday was spent buying fresh food and getting on with a few repairs to the boat’s gear. We had a port steaming light break on the trip from Falmouth and ended up with a freezer bag and cable-clips keeping the water out of it!

New light unit has been fitted and all now working.

The plan today is to lock out of Milford dock at midday Friday and move to Dale – a small sheltered bay 5nm down the river – and then leave for Ireland at 09:00 Saturday morning. Plan to arrive early Sunday morning.

Stats for the trip so far:

  • Dartmouth -Yealm : 35nm 5hrs/sailed 4hrs
  • Yealm -Falmouth: 44nm 9.5hrs/Sailed 8hrs (updated)
  • Falmouth-Milford: 133nm 28hrs/sailed 7hrs

Greetings lads
I’ve been following your trip with interest from Florida.I wish we could swap some of your badly needed rain for our sun.I’m wondering will you go cloickwise around Ireland or what would determine that, ocean currents maybe ? You’ll have to excuse my ignorance but I’m on my way out to purchase a copy of “Sailing for dummies” if I’m to keep up with this trip. She’s a beautiful boat. They call them blowboats over here.Break a leg or Godspeed or safe sailing or whatever they say in sailing circles ,I’ll be more informed after a weekend of reading and highlighting key words and hopefully a city victory on Sunday morning.
Take care for now,
Dan.

Hi Dan, we are here in Dun Laoghaire sheltering from the strong Northely winds prior to continuing up the East coast of Ireland. Just took the Dart into town and had lunch followed by a pint in Temple Bar; it feels a million miles from Kerry!
We chose to go clockwise because the prevailing winds were more likely to be in our favour and we will spend more time on the West coast aof uk/Scotland s it is more attractive. The West coast of Ireland is for a further trip probably on Persis who is probably sulking in Reenkilla right now! Hope all well with you and yours, David.
