June 22 – Amble Stormbound – Day 2

By | June 22, 2012

Still stuck in Amble with bad weather coming in on Saturday. Looks like it will have gone through by Sunday morning so expect to be on our way by then.

We are glad to report that the mainsail button cars have been fixed. The new parts arrived and all worked well. After we finished the repair on the sail we walked into Walkworth to have a look at the castle. The walk along the river Coquet was good. A proper estuary and at low tide it was teaming with bird life.

Walkworth castle is an English Heritage site so we paid our £4.50 each and started to explore. The keep was surprisingly well preserved. Lots of interconnecting rooms and passages. So often old castles can be a let down with just the odd tower and crumbling walls.

Had a pint of Alnwick ale in the local hostelry before heading back in stair-rod rain. The local bus whisked us back to Amble where we have been sitting on board waiting for the storm to start. Now it raining hard and we are on the boat looking at weather forecasts … Still air now when it should be a blow coming in. Remaining hopeful that we can escape from here soon but it looks like early Sunday.

More tomorrow …
